2025 Pagan Holidays

Note that just following the usual rotation, Raven has ended up on three pagan holidays in the first half of 2025, when she only reserved one. Is that ok with Raven? It is not necessary to have a pagan service – a general service touching on the theme (or some other theme) would suffice. Does the proposed schedule need to be adjusted? It is not yet in the Calendar.

Raven: I only chose Beltane for the first half of the year, and Mabon, Samhain, and Yule for the 2nd half. I’m glad to see Sofia has chosen to do Ostara, but I wanted to leave Imbolc, Litha, and Lughnasadh/Lammas open for anyone else. And, it doesn’t have to include a ritual like I usually do, nor does it have to be theatrical like I make it.Should nobody pick Imbolc, Ostara, or Lammas, I can do a service on that day, but I don’t want to seem like a Pagan Service Hog, which is why I limit my number of Pagan services to only half of the Wheel of The Year.

Etaoin has graciously agreed to take over the duties of treasurer after the first of the year.

Note: the impending deficit for this year becomes clearer. All pledges have been collected and all rent has been paid. The difference between annual expenses and income at this point in time is 70,000. Going forward, we will see the cost for presenters rise (roughly 16,000) and income from plate collections rise (roughly 20,000). This will not be sufficient to overcome the deficit. The root cause for the deficit is declining pledge income. Several larger donors have left the server and have not been replaced with newer ones.

• (August) Itico contacted Zoe about a seminar in planning, for late September, about disability access to voting. Just a heads up that it’s in planning and maybe we can add an announcement about it in our services when more info becomes available. (Itico got busy since then but the seminar is still in the works.)
• (August) Itico’s partner might want to lead a service. Zoe told Itico she should let us know her topic, and some Thursday dates that would work for her, and we’ll get her in the schedule and give her a “generic” template.. Also she can choose whether she wants to lead the entire service or deliver the sermon and lead the discussion while someone else does the rest.

Also reputable just-for-fun groups of long standing, like the Raglan Shire group that presents Tiny Caroling annually at UUtopia. Those groups can be asked to sign on to a revised version of the letter “from the undersigned groups,” or draft their own individual versions.

Another route would be to circulate a petition via one of those online petition-signing sites, to appeal directly to SL users.

We will most likely be dipping into our reserves at the end of the year as I estimate yearly expenses to require a L$300,000 pledged in order to break ever. Our reserves are robust and will carry us for many years, but we need more people pledging at the $100 (USA) rate. That’s roughly 25,000 Lindens

Dear Oberwolf Linden and Philip Linden,

As a religious community that has contributed to the economy and culture of Second Life for over seventeen years, we are writing to express our concerns and urge Linden Research to proactively address serious issues that have been raised repeatedly over the years.

We recognize the value that Second Life offers to a wide range of users, including religious groups, disability and social justice groups, as well as education, scientific, and creative communities. Our preference is to see the virtual world improve rather than to leave it. However, we must also consider our ethical and financial responsibilities. We recently withdrew funding from Kiva due to concerns with its financial dealings, and we are prepared to do the same with Second Life if the fiscal and ethical issues remain unaddressed.

We urgently request Linden Labs to directly address the following concerns:

1. Compliance with cybersecurity laws and data security risks

2. Vulnerability to misuse for money laundering and gambling

3. Potential virtual or real sexual harassment of children and child sexual abuse or “ageplay,” whether conducted by adults with child avatars or by actual children (due to possible failure of age verification)

4. Possibility of profiting from illegal activity and from images and videos of that activity, and the exportation of those images for real-world circulation

5. Concerns about the corporate culture, its climate, and inclusivity

We appreciate the “Official Statement From Executive Chairman Oberwolf Linden” issued on Wednesday, the 20th of March. It is a nice pledge to support the guidelines, but it is in essence a placeholder response with no substantive information, and does not allow for dialogue with, involvement of, or input by users in the democractic process which our Unitarian Universalist princples affirm and support.

Previous to Wednesday’s statement, the only indication of an effort to address these issues was a blog post claiming an unattributed indication by “reliable sources” to a sole blogger that the company was conducting internal investigations. It would be in the best interest of Linden Research and its Second Life users for your company to make a good faith effort to address these ongoing and repeated concerns in a public, transparent, and accountable manner.

We suggest the following proactive measures:

1. Contracting an outside auditing and security consulting firm

2. Hiring security and financial compliance managers with solid backgrounds and no previous connections to the company

3. Providing open, ongoing, two-way communication with Second Life users regarding these issues, to keep us updated on progress

Implementing these measures would increase our confidence in your company and our comfort in maintaining a presence on the Second Life platform.

Second Life has been experiencing a decline in user numbers for some time. We would prefer to see this virtual world, with its excellent potential, improve and expand. Our efforts to that end will be ongoing, including the publication of this letter on our website and outreach to other groups that may be interested in joining forces with us. The issues raised do not disappear when people are silent; they are resolved only when people are vocal and proactive, as we hope Linden Research itself will be.

Imagine the positive impact Linden Research could have by taking a leadership position, modeling constructive change and responsiveness to users in an online platform. Other corporations may follow your lead, resulting in better virtual realities and their positive influence as part of the larger, very real world we all share.

Treasurer’s report January 31, 2023

As of January 31, 2023, we had pledges from 6 persons for L$150,000. In early March I will continue the pledge campaign by contacting members by IM.

I have stopped all loans on KIVA and as the loans that are out are repaid, I will collect the money and return it to the treasury.

UUtopia Report – Zyzzy

• Aime moved to Alcott NNW
• A new resident, Stella Vespera (far.wanderer) immediately snapped up Aime’s 1024 in UUtopia

Saturdays have been just a few people, so I haven’t done the BUNT homilies. Trying to alternate Open Topic with a subject homily. Good discussions and company.

· In 2023 there were 13 pledging members, down from 14 in 2022, and 18 in 2021. I will begin soliciting 2024 pledges in February, by announcements at services, notices and personal IMs.

UUtopia Report – Zyzzy

• I’ve been in contact with Pomona. I’ve asked her to give me modify permission for her stuff, as I’m considering moving it to a skybox.
• LunaLinda wanted a 1024, but there wasn’t one available, which is why I’m thinking of moving Pomona.
• Options:
  • Put Pomona’s stuff in a skybox
  • Move her meditation area in the commons, rest into a skybox
  • Split some of Zyzzy’s land to free up some 1024’s

Outreach – Et

• FYI: Revised Article II is a topic for January in my RL congregation.
• Et updated the Article II billboard with the latest wording.

Library Report – ?

• Pomona will not be in SL for the foreseeable future.
• Et has set up a blue ball object behind the new Article II Values billboard to accept notecards: service notecards or OOS’s. They will be renamed “OOS yyyy-mm-dd topic (name of service leader)” (it might change, Et to rename.) Also setting up a set of panels, one for each year, to retrieve services. January: Still in progress, but a few years should show up Really Soon.
