Minutes of the FUUCSL Leadership Group Meeting
Thursday, February 23, 2012
The meeting was called to order at 5:30 pm SLT by Zyzzy Zarf.
Present: Zyzzy Zarf, Darcy Cedarbridge, Etaoin Barecelona, Zena Silverstar, Sofia Freenote, and Tee Auster

Occupancy Update – Zyzzy Zarf
  • Things are better!
  • Actions this month included rental of a parcel by a former UUresident, Expansion by a current UU Resident, and increased contributions by a current UU Resident
  • Increased occupancy resulted in a lower loss.
  • Alcott is not yet at break-even at 100% occupancy. Alcott contains common areas.
  • Actions considered were increasing the rental rate, reducing the common area, sub dividing lots and attracting new UU residents.
  • The common space on Alcott is valued.
  • Residents and sim owners are feeling the effects of the recession.
  • Rental at UUtopia is reasonably priced as compared to other Sl properties. Small affordable lots are available as starter lots. (Example $5/month for a 512)
  • The discussion on occupancy options and rates will continue.
  • New members might consider living at UUtopia

  • Zyzzy will come up with a plan and present it next meeting.
UUtopia/CLF Outreach-Etonian Barcelona
  • FUUCSL and UUtopia are getting visibility within the Church of the Larger Fellowship (CLF), which may have positive implications.
  • Direction is needed from the Leadership group as the relationship develops.
  • CLF ministers and consultants have visited UUtopia.
  • CLF has 3000 members and open discussion on their part may create interest for us. Approximately 30-70 attend their weekly online service.
  • We have 65 members and approximately 20 attend our weekly Thursday service.
  • CLF makes UUtopia a destination on Sunday night (and Monday afternoon) when they do their online service. Approximately 70 people watch/participate in the CFL service.
  • Etonain uses a “browser on a prim” to bring their live stream window into the UUtopia Sanctuary on screens he has created.
  • The CFL online service consists of a real time chat window in addition to the CFL minister chatting, pre-recorded videos, music based video with lyrics to sing along,
    • The CFL service starts with an intro hymn
    • Chalice lighting video. People chat in the text window say “I light the chalice in xxxxx” In the chat window in their online service ET lets them know that we’re participating from inside SL. Et will say, “Three of us are lighting the chalice in Second Life”
    • Joys and concerns consist of a short video. People type their Joys and Concerns in chat.
    • Sermon is Prerecorded (10 minutes)
    • Discussion and Close (10 minutes)

Impact and Implications

  • CFL members visit UUtopia and/or our service in after seeing us in the chat from the CFL Sunday service.
  • There is feedback from the CFL members/leadership during the CFL service in chat that it would be nice for them to be in SL.
  • UUtopia is an obvious place for CLF to start if they decide that they would like to expand within SL. We may be asked to spend time with CLF newbies to get them used to the SL User Interface such as help them with a few builds, show them around UUtopia and SL in general. If they were to attach an island, for example, as non-profit they may qualify for that tier rate. Or they could go with a homestead sim, which would be less expensive.
  • UUtopia has the potential to be a “home base” for CLF.We’ve had a people come in from CLF to SL. There are current members of UUtopia who are members of the CLF. Being a member of CLF also provides the official UUA publications.

CLF Sunday service compared to FUUCSL Thursday Service

  • Although both are chat based, the format is very different than what we do within SL. The interaction is different.Our medium is perceived by those within to process greater depth.
  • We have a squid.

Summary

  • Etonian believes the screened and text based current format works for the CLF and does not see the CLF taking over the Thursday service unless a CLF member wants to enter the Thursday rotation.
  • UUtopia may be an opportunity for CLF outreach. Our medium could be an expansion of services in addition to their existing mail-run, Facebook-based activities and online service.We have a strong sense of community and connectedness in UUtopia/FUUCSL. This community has helped people in Real Life.
  • The tone of the discussion is that it would be beneficial to get familiar with the CLF services and welcome any of them who come into SL. It’s a natural partnership.
  • We will continue the discussion with Etaoin as our point person.
